Sphenoid Sinusitis: One of The Most Dangerous Sinus Infection

By now you must be knowing that my respiratory tract is almost everyday Infected. This year was not a very good year for me, One may be because of CF’s progression and secondly, here in India, it’s very difficult to diagnose anything on time because of lack of awareness. But by God’s grace, I am fighting it. The sinusitis infections made it worse. I have always had Pan sinusitis and was asked to undergo a surgery when it was found out but with yoga, breathing exercises, nasal irrigation, I was always able to manage it.

What is Pan sinusitis?

It is when all the four sinuses become inflamed from fungal or bacterial infection, or allergies, at one time, then it is called Pansinusitis, and this requires an evaluation.

I had no idea why did I have continuous mild fever and infections. I got very ill, dizzy, fever, congestion, ear infection, fatigue, lost hope of ever working again  but then I had no nose blockage. So I could not think of it. Because over night the usage after nebulization and steam, the mucus will come down towards my throat and I will have severe cough in the morning and sometimes leading to vomits. I felt as if my stomach is filled with mucus and I am vomiting it.

Kept visiting my physician and somehow he couldn’t see it so severe. After I visited my pulmonalogist-, he advised me to go for ENT detailed check up. When I visited my ENT, he was shocked to see my CT Scan. All he asked me was how much do you suffer, Arouba? My Ct stated that I have moderate to severe bilateral maxillary and left symphenoid sinusitis and its one of the dangerous sinusitis. Sphenoid sinuses are just behind the skull, above the nasopharynx and just below the pituitary gland. It is difficult to identify diseases in this part because of its location.

Symptoms of sphenoid sinus disease are also the same with other sinusitis. The patient may experience :

  • cold
  • mucus discharge
  • headache
  • neck pain in some cases
  • weakened sense of smell

A person can only determine if the infection has reached the sphenoid when he feels the pain on top of your head or at the back of the neck. Sometimes a person may feel pain on the right or on the left side of the face.  This part of the sinus cannot be infected easily.

Sphenoid sinusitis should not be taken for granted because progressive growth of the infection can cause neurological damage. Of all the sinuses, the sphenoid is one of the most sensitive because of the connection between the sinus and the optic nerve.

Looking at me and my reports, he advised me to take again the conservative treatments. Surgeries in India in CF cases are not too successful and he didn’t want to take risk. He reminded me of my own healing capacity and sitting there somehow made me think of visiting this spiritual place in Rajasthan called Ajmer shrief. I wanted to go and sit there and pray to almighty for easing the pain, for giving me courage to face it again. Any way, I left and reached back to home, put back a smile again though I was worried but I didn’t want my ONLY HUSBAND to worry.

Back On IV Antibiotics:

They put me back on antibiotics and this time along with oral ones it’s Intervenous injections too. And I am back on strong IV antibiotics thrice a day and for a week-ten days. This is helping me a bit. But yes, its the stage which I always feared of and I would need to get the IV’s done every now and then. I am thinking of changing the place but relocating alone is quite a task but the process is on.

Combination of Injections like: Meropenem and Amikacin thrice a day.

What else can Help you:

  • Nebulization (I mix Asthlin, tobramycin 85mg and 20 mlof saline and take twice a day)
  • Steam with plain water for 5 minutes twice a day
  • Covering your head during nights
  • Massaging your chest and upper back along with your neck
  • Sleep well
  • Dont eat fruits, vegies after sunset
  • Drink milk with turmeric powder
  • Put in ear plugs while sleeping in
  • Gargles twice a day
  • And yes a lot of breathing exercises

I almost have been sick every day of my life and I almost have given up every day of my life but then there are people outside in the world who suffer much more than I do and I consider this a blessing for me.

Prevention is always better than cure. A person has to eat healthy foods. He has to abstain from eating too much fried and starchy foods. There are foods that can cause and can worsen sinus infections like dairy products. If we just take the needed amount and get rid of the excess, it will be easy for us to avoid illnesses such as this.

But then once you are off the IV’s you can put a nice dress on and go for a concert may be. My brother took me out for the concert and made sure I sit at a warm place. Dont forget to carry your meds along. Have Happy time.
